As promised to a couple of people, a short extract on parenting - TopicsExpress

As promised to a couple of people, a short extract on parenting from the novel High Rising by Angela Thirkell. She was writing in the 1930s, a series of novels which are very unfashionable these days, but a couple have been re published by Virago. I enjoyed them but not sure if I would recommend them, they are a product of their times. The heroine has the same tone as the heroine in Diary of a Provincial Lady which is one of my favourite books. This bit struck a chord When for about a quarter of a century, you have been fighting strong young creatures with a natural bias towards dirt, untidiness and carelessness, quite unmoved by noise, looking upon loud, unmeaning quarrels and abuse as the essence of polite conversation, oblivious of all convenience and comfort but their own, your resistance weakens She also refers to a spaniel as a breed having a foolish, amiable face which is quite a good description.
