As promoting the Heroin Alert event I was told that there isnt much we can do to stop the problem. That is partially true if we continue doing the same things as we have in the past. If we sit back and wait for someone else to get involved and fix the problem whether the government, a corporation, or an individual it will not improve and will most likely deteriorate. We must all individually accept ownership in this and work collectively to move forward. What have you done to educate yourself about the nature and scope of the problem? What have you done to educate your family? What have you done to foster relationships with neighbors and police for neighborhood crime and safety issues? What have you done to see what efforts the schools are doing with drug education efforts? It starts with individual commitment building into coalitions. We cant afford to look the other way, not get involved, or assume someone will care more than others and fix it. Our solution lies not in Washington DC or Augusta, they can offer supportive resources when influenced to do so. The solution starts in your homes at a family dinner, carrying over to your neighbors yards, the block, the police department, teaming up with or offering your support to school efforts and community service organizations like the Bangor Area Recovery Network. We build coalitions focusing on the problems and not the politics. We as a community can turn this around in our little area of the world, but it takes all of us and it begins with an individuals choice to be involved.
