As prompted by Reese Currie, Im posting Day 1 of the 5-Day - TopicsExpress

As prompted by Reese Currie, Im posting Day 1 of the 5-Day Influential Song Challenge, where I bare my musical soul and share the songs that have influenced me over the years. This list is interesting in that a lot of the songs I chose arent the ones that I have in heavy rotation, or ones that I even own today. Rather, these are the songs that changed the way I think and feel about music; the songs that fit into a funny-shaped niche in the back of my brain and stayed there my entire life. Song 1 is Dig It by Skinny Puppy, the godfathers of the industrial/noise-ambient/nouveau-electro scene in the 80s. I found Dig It on the slightly more accessible 1990 release of 12-Inch Anthology. Id been a fan of lots of genres up to that point, but Skinny Puppy caused my brain to twist about 90 degrees in my cranium. Here was music that was crass, with hard edges and sharp corners and no discernible plot that at times was an assault on the ears. There was no rhyme or reason to the songs - but they came together in a huge wonderful musical hot mess that found order in its own chaos. I dont think Ive produced any material quite as avant-garde as anything Skinny Puppy put out, but it taught me that music doesnt have to make sense to be complete. Music doesnt have to conform to any certain format or mold; it just has to excite and incite and leave you wanting more.
