As right as Paul is about love, I think it is important to understand that love is not perfect and that often as we love, we err. Human love is as imperfect as it is glorious and wonderful; but it is only grace and humility and courage that makes it work. We often, in loving, make some really horrible mistakes. It is only the grace of love that helps us survive and thrive even when we mess up. And mess up we do--everyone of us--But thank God for the grace that is in real love. Even a mistake made in love works out, in the end. This is a part of the meaning of faith. As I think about some of the ways that our public and private lives reach impasse and how much real love there often is on both sides, I am encouraged by the promises of God and the wisdom of history and scripture and good common sense from folk who love us who have never been famous or quoted or even remembered much by the world. Love is such a powerful reality. It surrounds us in beautiful forms and in troubling imperfect forms. But its there and it is an open book from which we may learn. I thank God for an open heart and mind and this incredible grace that carries me today. I thank God for dear friends who I know struggle with incredible things every day. I thank God for the courage that I see in so many forms every day. Thank God for helping me see the courage even in those who are certainly my enemy in certain contexts and in certain seasons, but not Gods enemies. I thank God for love that endures things. I thank God and I pray at this altar that I have made with my struggles and my appreciation and the resources afforded me in this wilderness, for you. I pray for those needful of forgiveness. I pray for those in the midst of loving rightly and wrongly. I pray for those who are bitter and those who are buoyantly joyful. I prayer those who are struggling and moving and striving and teaching and uncertain. I pray for those in love. I pray for those who are struggling publicly against forces that are not positive or loving. I pray for myself. I pray for you. I pray for loves sake.
