As several have written and asked privately and most of my friends know Im an open book at this point in my life, yesterdays appointment with a new Orthopedic Surgeon (OS) gave me a lot to consider. Following a thorough exam and review of my xrays and MRI, he advised me that he thought I could be improved by arthroscopic surgery removing the fractured portion of patella and cleaning up the area including removing the suture remnants, which have been shown to be a source of painful irritation for some patients. This would require only 4 - 6 weeks of rehab. This is 180 degrees from the recommendation of the UC-SF physician who proposed an open reduction-internal fixation of the fractured patella and re-repair of the quadriceps tendon, which would then require an 8 MONTH rehab. As Im NOT an OS, Ive already made an appt. with the Chief of Orthopedics in Santa Rosa, CA for a week from today to aid with my decision-making.
