As several parts of the world celebrated #NationalCoffeeDay today with free or discounted cups (free trade), I figured this would be a good opportunity to point-out several interesting facts on the heritage of coffee and the Coffee Industry. Rodgers, 1934][see: pic 1] 2) Was first harvested and introduced around the 13th-15th century. 3) Spread from Ethiopia to modern day Yemen – when the Abyssinian emperor #Ezanas II invaded the Arabian peninsula.[Note: Arabia is geographically & culturally Northeast Africa and has always been considered in ancient times apart of Ancient Ethiopia] 4) The word Mocha comes from #Mocha or Mokha, a port city on the Red Sea coast of #Yemen 5) Sufi Baba Budan – who according to legend, smuggled 7 coffee beans from Yemen to India ending the Ottoman monopoly. [see pic. 5]. It was used among the Sufis (Black Islamic mystics) to help them practice their late-night prayer routines. Once introduced, it spread throughout the Muslim, Arab, and European empires at the time. 6) The Arabic word for coffee is qahwah which as applied to wine so it became affectionately known as the wine of Islam 7) Coffee is the 2nd highest traded commodity after Crude Oil. 8) Coffee is the most consumed drink next to water - 255 million coffee drinkers in North America 9) World revenue: $30 billion in 2014, and is forecast to rise to $32.46 billion by 2016, according to data from research company Statista. 10) Annual revenue in the U.S. - $18 billion dollars including specialty drinks (which include a mocha, latte, espresso, café mocha, cappuccino, frozen/iced coffee beverages, etc.) 11) The average price for brewed coffee is $2.38.
