As some of our supporters may be aware, we do not support the buying and selling of dogs over the internet. This week alone, we have received numerous calls from people who have purchased dogs online that have shown behavioural problems that the previous owner did not identify at the time of purchasing the dog. We have managed to help some of these dogs but we do not have the space to help them all. Rescue centres are full to the brim with dogs that are fully rehomable. Unfortunately, due to the increase in purchasing over the internet, homes for our dogs has decreased. Established rescue centres are actually pretty good at their job. Assessments are done with dogs to ensure that they are placed in a suitable home environment, whether this environment has another dog, cat or children within the home. If you purchase a dog over the internet, there is NO back up available for the dog - Foal policies are that if you are no longer able to keep a Foal dog then there is always a place for the dog at Foal Farm. Other rescues also adopt this policy. What is more concerning is the sheer scale of selling dogs over internet sites. With the amount of dogs being euthanized every day in this country, there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to breed dogs such as staffies any longer. Rescues need several years to recover from the surge in the breeding of these dogs due to irresponsible and greedy breeders who only wish to make money out of litters and have no concerns about who the puppies are sold to. Also of great concern is the number of dogs sold on the internet that are used for dog bait. In fact, over 50% of dogs sold in this manner are used for bait or dog fighting. This is not acceptable – we can no longer call ourselves a nation of dog lovers when we are comfortable with dogs and puppies being sold like a pair of shoes or a handbag – to be discarded when no longer of use. One of the saddest parts has to be the poor dog who gets taken away from his home to a fate ..... well who knows what fate? It is out of control.
