As some of you know, I do consulting work for the military. Or rather, I used to. My most recent contract ended last Friday. I may return to it in some capacity - depending on what Im offered - but as of today, I am a full time freelance writer. Its what Ive always wanted to do. Those of you who contributed via Stonekettle Stations donation button have made this possible. Thank you, sincerely. Im making the most of it. I dont know how other writers do it, but for me it has to be a job. I was up at 5:30 this morning - as usual. 45 minutes on the elliptical while Modern Marvels taught me all about the art of whiskey distilling (which beats the every livin hell out of spending that same time driving into Anchorage, I gotta tell you), a hot shower, and its now five hours and three double espressos later and Ive got 5000 good words down, arranged into something that bears a striking resemblance to the first draft of a novel chapter. And its GOOD. Time for a break, Ill make bread, I think. Then two hours this afternoon selecting articles from Stonekettle Station for compilation into a collected essay chapbook. Which will leave me a couple hours in front of the lathe. The rest of the week will be divided between novel, compilation work, and a couple of essays. Not bad so far. I could get used to this gig.
