As someone who doesnt like pictures of herself, and doesnt like having her looks commented on, and feels REALLY conflicted about even taking selfies--and hates the process with a passion--this was a good thing to read. And I really identify with the reclaiming and redefining part. My grandmother veered between praising my looks and ripping them apart. The first time I got hit on, I was 15, and the guy was in his 40s. I have a tendency to confuse femininity with weakness and victimization. More than anything else, I was raised with the absolute commandment that a womans beauty was all that mattered...but a beautiful woman was an object who would ruin men, her looks would cause men to mistreat her, and any attempt to highlight beauty was to be a slut. And maybe its okay to still be fighting through those ingrained reactions still, and maybe I should stop worrying about it so much. (Ha. Hahahahahaha. Worry is my middle name.)
