As someone who has just enjoyed a wonderful evening out, without a car, in Peterborough, all I can say is that someone who lives where you live in Peterborough can survive without a car, as long as that someone is physically active, enjoys the company of others and does not require access to services or amenities outside the immediate area. For that, recourse to taxis would be necessary on a regular basis. However the distances involved on foot almost preclude the active lifestyle of a working person who would like to indulge in the economy and frugality of daily grocery shopping on foot at the nearest butchers, fish mongers, bakery or fruit and vegetable store. To achieve that requires a density of population similar to St-Jean-Baptiste. There must be room downtown for at least another 20,000 people, just with infill and reoccupation of unoccupied spaces with residential potential. Cities are for people and their amenities; leave the countryside for our and nature’s support systems and try to live off the land closest to you when possible. Peterborough’s greatest asset is it’s almost limitless opportunities for civic improvement, on the level of urban, suburban and interurban connectivity. Reflections by my Uncle who grew up in Ptbo but now lives in Quebec City.
