As the MNA/NNU prepares to refile legislation that would penalize hospitals that pay excessive compensation to hospital CEOs, a story appeared in today’s Cape Cod Times about Cape Cod Hospital’s efforts to continue to pay its ex CEO a six figure salary, three years after leaving the facility under questionable circumstances. This is another example of the imbalance in the health care system, where CEOs are paid enormous sums, using our taxpayer dollars, while cutting care and services for the patients utilizing their hospitals. Last month, nurses at Cape Cod Hospital were picketing outside their hospital over unsafe patient care conditions due to the lack of staff and unsafe patient assignments. Early in the year, the hospital closed its inpatient endoscopy unit, a unit that served thousands of patients, particularly vulnerable elders who require a hospital-based program.
