As the Washington, D.C. literati know, local author Wendi Harris Kaufman lost a long battle with cancer this August. Kaufman, well reviewed by critics and beloved by her readers, left a lasting impact on those around her. Author Joyce Maynard offered a remembrance in the New York Observer, and local book critic Bethanne Patrick, The Book Maven posted an entry in Washingtonian Magazine. Local writer Mary Kay Zuravleff spoke in Kaufman’s place at George Mason University and shared her introduction with us below. Kaufman’s last collection of stories, HELEN ON 86TH STREET, was released on Monday.
