As the adventure novel by Jules Verne, the exhibition Around the World in 80 Letters pushes the boundaries: those of freedom, imagination and curiosity. Eugène Delacroix’s notes of his diplomatic trip to Morocco serve as an inspiration for his paintings, beatnik Jack Kerouac tells his mother about his ideal life on the Californian coast and globetrotter Ernest Hemingway writes about going out in Quebec, the Cuban rhythm of life and his safaris on the African continent. The travel stories wander from wintry Moscow to sunny Polynesia, over the top of the Annapurna to the dark seabed and via the Suez Canal to Saint-Exupery’s New York. Around the World in 80 Letters is a tribute to the explorer and an invitation to get lost in familiar or unknown places. Including: 17th-century maritime maps and atlases, some of the last letters of Robert Louis Stevenson and Chinese steles of Victor Segalen.
