As the bitter cold tightens its grip on much of the country, what better way to enjoy the great indoors than by viewing an epic movie? Our MOVIES YA MIGHTA MISSED MONDAY saga for this week is BARRY LYNDON, a three-hour tour through 18th century Europe. Redmond Barry (Ryan O’Neal) is an Irishman from humble origins who yearns for a better and richer existence, and will cheat and lie as needed to realize that dream. Through war and misadventure he finds the good life, but not without heavy cost. Stanley Kubrick is a justifiably celebrated director, yet in contrast to his marquee efforts (2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, DR. STRANGELOVE, THE SHINING, etc.) this film is rarely mentioned. And it should be – it’s a very involving story told well and beautifully, with some of the lushest and most meticulously detailed cinematography of his career. That approach is perfect for the setting of Barry’s journey, which eventually takes him to the parlors and gardens of the highest European nobility of the time. A good filmmaker conveys an imaginary world; a great one puts you in the middle of one and makes you want to stay.
