As the clock strikes 12 tonight, echoes of “Merdeka” will be heard throughout Malaysia no matter where you are. 57 years free from colonial bondage, nevertheless, we are not free as we make it to be. When I was in school, Merdeka day celebration was a time where we came together and celebrated our differences as well as our togetherness as a community. Regardless of race, creed or religion. Unfortunately, at present, the same cannot be said. We have lost our sense of direction. The ethnicity gap is growing ever wider encouraging xenophobia. The harsh reality; The spirit of patriotism is forced rather than encouraged. It is about time, we do a little bit of soul searching and get back on the right track. It is time where all of us get our heads together and figure a way out to do away with religious extremism and racial supremacy. Malaysia has come a long way. However, we can only move forward when we fulfil our potential. A forward direction where we will see the union between Tunku Abdul Rahman and his vision of Malaysia. Selamat Hari Merdeka, Malaysia.
