As the cruelties and killing of stray dogs still continues in Gorj County, please keep on sending the appeal letter to the Mayor of Tg-Jiu and other authorities. Statements made by mayor of Tg-Jiu in the local mass-media that he will "sacrifice" all the strays after 14 days, as a direct result of the law adopted recently by Romanian Parliament, we make an appeal to you, all animal lovers, to send your own words disapproving this barbaric measure or copy/paste the letter bellow and send it to the following addreses. It comes as an unpleasant surprise that you came forward as a supporter of this inefficient and barbaric law, especially when there are other humane solutions that can be taken into account. This new law gives you, as a mayor, the possibility to choose: 1) the stray dogs will be kept in shelters, and authorities can organize neutering and adoption programmes in order to decrease the number of stray dogs 2) euthanasia of all dogs in 14 days. There are CIVILIZED cities whose mayors announced that they will not adopt such a barbaric measure, the Euthanasia, and they will choose humane and efficient measures such as : to maintain dogs in the shelter, in the neighborhood in kennels ( as in sect.4, in Bucharest), massive spay/neuter and adoption campaigns, cooperation with local ngos and animal lovers, adopting Council Decisions to force owners to neuter their pets, penalities for those who refuse to neuter and for those who abandon their pets. These kind of measures had been already adopted in cities like Sibiu, Cluj, Tecuci, Cernavoda, Sighisoara, Bacau etc and mayors declared already they are against euthanasia of healthy dogs. You are rushing to state that the Euthanasia is the only solution for solving this problem, but, until now WHAT HAVE YOU DONE to control and diminish the number of strays?!! Let’s imagine you would kill all dogs over the night: all the researches and all the similar actions in many cities in the world show that in few weeks the streets will be full again of dogs, as people will continue to abandon their dogs and puppies from unneutered females. HOW MANY NEUTERING/SPAYING, ADOPTION and EDUCATION have the City Hall done since 2000 ? As the local media revealed in past years, actually you’ve always adopted a killing policy, but it is not out in the open, being hidden from public: the dogs the Public Catchers had been collecting were either abandoned in forests ( being shot by the hunters) or in different areas around Gorj county, killed during catching or transport, hundreds of poisoned dogs and shot discovered in areas like Dragoieni, Turcinesti, Garbage Pit, Vadeni, Barsesti, near Jiu river etc. Using part of the killing methods described above authorities have spent huge amounts of money from local budget without solving or, not even ,diminish the stray dogs number.
