As the deadly Ebola virus resurfaces in Lofa with new cases among people who are coming from other parts of the country especially Monrovia, the people of Lofa remain confident that they will defeat the virus despite discouraging news of the virus. The news of Richard Akoi death ( the nurse who I mentioned in my post yesterday of got infected after treating a survivor who got re infected) come as a shock to many in Voinjama especially at this time when the Health Team is scoring significant mark against the virus and with the level of awareness among Health workers. However, the city of Voinjama today changed the direction of the news from the deadly Ebola Virus to Environmental news when a local voluntary environmental group (SHADE-LIBERIA) launched a Tree Planning program to help sensitize the people of the importance of protecting the environments from climate change. Speaking at the program, the Executive Director of the group Peter Tarnue Dorbor said, it was his dream to help protect the environments and to prevent climate change. He said protecting the environment was everybody business and if we, as people don’t start planning trees now it would be too late when we decide later. It can be recorded sometime in May 2014, a devastating storm struck the city of Voinjama leaving over hundred homes destroyed and over thousand homeless which the Environmentalists blamed on deforestation and the cutting down of trees in the city. Also at the program was the Program Unit Manager of Plan-Liberia in Lofa County Tarnue Kabbar who pledged his organization support to the group. He said his Organization was involved in Disaster Risk Management (DRM) helping to educate people about climate change and to allow communities decide what would best for them in protecting their own environments. He promised the group (SHADE) of establishing a partnership in helping to save the Environments. Planning the first tree to mark start of the planning of trees in the city of Voinjama, the City Mayor of Voinjama Youngor Sherman said, this was the beginning of creating parks around the city so that the City can attract tourists at the end of the deadly Ebola Virus. She said even though we are presently at war with the Ebola Virus, but we should also notice that the climate around us is changing faster like the spread of the Ebola virus. She said if we don’t protect the environment now by stopping the cutting down of our forests after the Ebola War, we should be brazing ourselves for another virus and that will be CLIMATE CHANGE she concluded. Voinjama City is on a sober watch as vehicles loaded with passengers enter the city in numbers. We have talk and talk for government to restrict the movement of people inside Liberia and across the borders but cannot hold therefore we are now living at the mercy of people from Monrovia and other parts of the country. It’s disappointing and heartbreaking right now in Lofa.
