As the microbes digest the waste, they generate electrons. Many scientists have been working on this for years, but efficiency in obtaining the electricity has always been difficult. The researchers report that their batter is as efficient as some of the best solar panels available today. In the future, this technology may be used at wastewater treatment facilities. Additionally, it could be used in lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water that have “dead zones” due to high levels of fertilizer runoff.
