As the parent of a child with an allergy to peanuts, I worry every single day that my son could die from ingesting a peanut product. He is not expected to outgrow this allergy, so we will always live our lives on high alert. As a reminder of just how dangerous peanuts are for Marcus, I feel the need to post these photos taken seven years ago after attending a bonfire. The only thing that Marcus ate that night was one weiner, from a bag that was being shared around the fire. We can only assume that the weiner he ate was touched by another person, reaching into the bag to get one, who had been eating a peanut product, maybe smores made with a nutty bar, or a trace of something left on their hands from earlier that day. His reaction was not immediate. He was weezy after we got home so I gave hime his puffer a few times thinking that the smoke from the fire had cause his asthma to flare up. I put him to bed and thought nothing of it, until I checked on him before going to bed myself, and saw his body covered in hives and his eyes, nose and mouth swelled so much that his face looked flat. Fast thinking, a dose from his epipen and a night in the clinic pushing benadryl saved my son. That is something I never want to go through again...Once in a lifetime is too much! I took these pictures the day after when his swelling started to go down, but it took days of benadryl for it to go away completely. All from a trace of peanut on a weiner. It takes a village to raise a child, and I depend on my little community to help keep my son safe. Peanuts are poison to him....please take it seriously.
