As the recent posting of a rattlesnake with a quail in it recd rave reviews (over 18,000 views), I pulled this one from the archives (July 2009). Intern Jeremy Rychlik reported a mortality signal on a radio-marked bobwhite, but he couldnt locate the transmitter, or any signs of the kill. He reckoned the collar had slipped off and was lying in some tall johnsongrass. I went with him the next morning and we tromped around through the tall grass for several minutes looking for the transmitter (its about the size of a quarter). After perhaps 5 minutes of searching, and parting the johnsongrass with our feet and hands, I spotted the snake coiled up tightly; it was no bigger around than a big cinnamon roll. It never rattled until we pulled it out onto the nearby road to get some pics, and this video. We mustve stepped within inches of it several times. As you can see, its a decent sized snake, both in length and girth (of course part of the girth is that quail!). This was the first of 4 of our radio-marked bobwhites killed/consumed by rattlesnakes in 2009.
