As the sense of taste diminishes for someone with dementia, food - TopicsExpress

As the sense of taste diminishes for someone with dementia, food can taste bitter and the person may crave sugar or sweet flavours. You can make the most of this by increasing fruit intake as fresh fruit may become more acceptable than vegetables. Choose naturally sweet fruits such as peaches, nectarines, strawberries and melons and check for sweetness before serving, cut into finger sized pieces that are easy to manage. Use a fine sprinkling of powdered sugar to enhance sweetness if necessary. If you want to get really fancy, serve with a small dish of yoghurt and honey or favourite ice cream. Remember, you are now at the stage where there is no point in forcing a reluctant person to eat spinach or cabbage when they really dont want to and which may taste terrible to them. Work around what they do want to get the necessary nutrition into them with the minimum distress to all concerned.
