As the tide of sentiment toward Slavery soured, southern planters - TopicsExpress

As the tide of sentiment toward Slavery soured, southern planters worrying that their free labor would go away created whimsical, happy images of the south showing the rest of the country, and the world, that the south was really a happy place and that Slaves and Negroes were happy living in their segregated communities. This image was portrayed again in advertisements and eventually movies which showed large, spacious plantations with happy mammies and uncles. One big happy family. As late as the 1950s and early 1960s, Mississippi was still spreading that line and commissioned the making of the film This is Mississippi which was taken around the country with speakers who spoke about how well things were going in the segregated state.
