As the top Democrat on the House Human Resources Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over aid to needy families, unemployment insurance, and child welfare issues, I continue to oppose proposals that would slash the safety net for struggling families. We need to work in a bipartisan manner to help improve these programs that provide assistance to economically disadvantaged families in our community. Instead, the Republican House this week passed a bill that cut Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) by millions of dollars and passed another bill – the so-called “Needs Not Weed Act” that seeks to reinforce old stereotypes about the poor in our community.
