As the weather chills, many find themselves with joint pain, swelling and stiffness. This isnt in your head. The way your body changes with the barometric change is real. If you are working out, take the time to warm up a little more than you do in the summer. If you are taking a class regularly and notice the instructor isnt increasing the warm up portion of the workout appropriately, sorry..dump it. They arent doing you any favors. If you arent working out BECAUSE its cold take heed: One reason cold weather is linked to joint pain is people are less likely to work out when its chilly and damp. Being a couch potato is bad news for your joints because exercise helps lubricate them to PREVENT pain. Too cold out? Bring your workout indoors -- and dont overdo it! Choose lower impact aerobic moves that are easy on joints, which enhance your range of motion. Resistance training can also help because it builds joint-supporting muscles. You are not a bear...dont hibernate! Make adjustments to your workout. Eat more leafy greens. Increase your vitamin C intake and get more Omega 3s (salmon and nuts). And most importantly...KEEP moving!!
