As this Synod draws to a close, I have to confess that Im inspired. Earlier this week, I felt desolation around the division and confusion experienced at this Synod which gave way for some online idiocy from many Catholics and non Catholics alike (Memes are fun...but when people reduce a complicated process like this Synod to Memes as some have been doing this week, they do a great disservice to the Church). This desolation has yielded to a mild optimism that acknowledges that we have a long road ahead of us, but that with such a great pontiff stirring the ship, we will not shy away from the heavy conversations, or the difficult issues. Ive seen this in the way people have been speaking and writing about the Synod, and Ive heard it in a homily at St Patricks Basilica today that nearly left me in tears...there is an openness in the hearts of many in this Church, and that alone is more change than we ever could have expected! Of course, at this point in time, its time to finally hear from the man who has been silent about the proceedings up till this point...Pope Francis! I can honestly tell you that reading his speech to the Synodal assembly (which he gave Saturday) was almost as exciting as reading about the Stuff that came out Monday!! news.va/en/news/pope-francis-speech-at-the-conclusion-of-the-synod
