As we close out the last few days of our Administration, we want to thank everyone for the hard work of turning the City around these last 4 years. We think Oakland has steadily risen into a long awaited renaissance. This is a good summary of the highlights -- flipgorilla/p/23735439970014799/show Our apologies for 3 main accomplishments that got left out: 1) This year the Cellphone Kill Switch legislation will go into effect. The plummeting robbery rate (-31%) should drop even more. Oakland helped lead this national fight. 2) Oakland governments including the School District and County have led targeted efforts to improve outcomes for young men of color now championed by the Presidents My Brothers Keeper program. 3) The year end crime stats show a second year of dramatic reductions in murders--the lowest rate since 2000 at the same time that the Oakland Police have now gone 19 months without an officer involved shooting. For the last decade we have averaged 8-9 shootings annually. Our hope is that WE RISE TOGETHER...that every part of the city of all backgrounds prospers especially those neighborhoods that Martin Luther King, Jr. described 50 years ago at the March on Washington -- islands of poverty in oceans of prosperity. I believe we can do it and will be a model for the nation.
