As we draw closer to Thanksgiving Week, among the list of names some are grateful for is the name Ella Strickland. Her name was on the Amite Elementary School for all of the reasons outstanding people have their names on buildings. She did not just teach. She did not just open the world of reading and counting to first graders. She planted a seed of love for school, a desire to learn, to educate yourself for a lifetime. Known affectionately as Cousin Ella to all of her students, gave them the feeling they were somehow connected to her in a different way from other teachers. Like many teachers at the Ella Strickland Grammar School, her students were her children. It was a time now only in memories and unlikely to ever be seen again. So, perhaps, Thanksgiving is the perfect week for nostalgia, dont you think?
