As we drove into the cemetery yesterday, I noticed a military - TopicsExpress

As we drove into the cemetery yesterday, I noticed a military stone that I read (while moving) as CSA. Since that wasnt likely, I walked back and read John Bates, Co., A, 119th Colored Regiment. I have learned a few things about John this morning, but want to do more research as time permits. The 119th was formed at Camp Nelson. John actually served under the name Jack Arvin (or Arvan). By 1880 he was living on Marble Creek and he lived there until his death in 1936. I found the application for his stone and also learned that he received a disability pension after 1896. I also found other members of the 119th in Jessamine also in the 1890 Veterans Census. This could be a very interesting story. It took great courage to serve in the colored regiments, since they were seldom offered quarter by the confederate troops.
