As we get closer to the summer solstice, there are some great opportunities to see planets and other cosmic objects in the night sky. Take Mercury for example. If you have decent weather and a clear view of the northwestern horizon, trace out the ecliptic across the sky, starting with Saturn in the East, then Mars, then the Moon, then Jupiter near Geminis Castor and Pollux. Mercury will be on that line, about halfway between Jupiter and the setting sun. There are several sighting opportunities of the International Space Station for Portland from now through June 21, and some of the best will occur tonight and Saturday night. These flyovers will be at bright magnitude of -3 (equals the brightness of Venus) and visible for duration of 6 minutes. spotthestation.nasa.gov/sightings/#.U5D75uBNuJU A special thank you to our Space Science Director Jim Todd for this information!
