As we get ready to walk today to promote autism awareness and acceptance, here are some thoughts from Dr. Anthony Richtsmeier, a Developmental Pediatrician and ASK Board Member: I chose my profession as a pediatrician because I wanted to work where I could contribute to the well being of children and families. My interest in behavioral medicine grew out of seeing the breadth of impact that health and developmental situations can have on the lives of children and families, and wanting to be able to have a positive impact. My interest in autism spectrum disorders came about through seeing an increasing number of children and families in need and discovering the very unique nature of the challenges, the limitations of our understanding, and the limitations of related services. There has been much progress in the field, but we still have a long way to go to improve understanding, identification, information sharing, resource accessibility, and efficacy of treatments. It has been my privilege to be on the ASK board to learn from the other board members, to learn more about children and families in their environments, to gain more awareness of children’s and families’ everyday strengths and challenges, to know community resources, and to contribute as I can.
