As we go back to Numbers 7 Verse 2 we see…..”That the princes of Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, (these are the same twelve princes that God told Moses to choose in Numbers Chapter 1 to aid Moses in the numbering of all the tribes of Israel) as the verse tells us as it continues…..”who were the princes of the tribes, and were over them that were numbered, offered:” So now these same princes that aided Moses in the numbering of Israel are used to make sure that each of their tribes will bring an offering to the Lord as well. Verse 3……”And they brought their offering before the LORD, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for each one an ox: (In other words, one wagon was given for every two tribes and one ox was given per tribe) and they brought them before the tabernacle.” Why was it that these tribes were commanded to bring these offerings before the Lord? Verse 4 tells us…….”And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Take it of them, (take the offering from each tribe) that they (the offerings) may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his service. And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites. Two wagons and four oxen he gave unto the sons of Gershon, according to their service:” The Gershonites would need these to carry the coverings of the tabernacle, the curtains, the walls and the doors of the tabernacle. Verse 8……..”And four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according unto their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.” The sons of Merari would need more wagons and oxen to not only carry the (heavier) framework of the tabernacle, but also the framework, the curtains and the walls of the court round about the tabernacle, including the boards, the bars, the sockets and the pins. That is why the sons of Merari needed twice as much wagons and oxen to carry their load because they had much more to carry. Verse 9……”But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none: (no wagons or oxen) because the service of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their shoulders.” This was the mistake that David made when he first brought the Ark of God to Jerusalem. He had it in a wagon, Uzzah tried to balance it when it was sliding off and God slew him. The second time David made sure the ark was carried by Levites (according to 1 Chronicles 15) and we can be sure (after David studied his mistake) they were from the tribe of Kohath, and that’s where He danced before the ark (dressed only in his linen cloth) as they brought it to Jerusalem.
