As we go into the second week of June...my eyes and heart start turning West/ Southwest to Kansas ...and WHEAT HARVEST! Coming from a strong agricultural background: My grandpa managed the Co-op Grain elevators in Dodge City, KS for many years...and my dad was actually born in the family farm house outside Winfield, KS...where I currently have a second home...its a time that harkens me back to my own formative childhood. I grew up in a grocery store where my dad was manager ..in Kiowa, Kansas and went to most of my public schooling there graduating from Kiowa High School with an outstanding background/ education and friends! I think with affection upon that town situated on the Oklahoma/ Kansas line... which then was an important agricultural center in the state. The official FIRST wheat harvest cuttings usually happened in Kiowa/ Barber County, Kansas (and still do)...and wonderful memories/ times of all that when I was younger are still vivid in my memory. This time of year is busy there as harvest is starting... I worked on several farms...and my thoughts go back to driving the wheat trucks...waiting in line for hours at the wheat elevators...drinking iced tea out of coffee cans, sitting top of the truck and talking to drivers ahead/ behind me ..waiting to dump the load to be picked up later by rail. Such great memories of all that still with me today... Im so thankful I lived in Kiowa, Kansas during those years. So fortunate was I... (Y)
