As we have seen for the past few months, the shelter is working hard to help the animals of Fremont County. Not only Doug but MANY of the staff and volunteers are making a huge difference! I just want to make a few shout outs to two staff members at the shelter who really go the extra mile for little to no recognition. David Holder, the lead kennel attendant for the canine companions at the shelter, has taken his job to heart. When youre looking for David and you don’t find him working his butt off the make sure every kennel is clean and every dog is happy, you can always find him by listening carefully for his belly laugh coming from an animals kennel. David can be found almost exclusively with the dogs he notices don’t get the needed attention from volunteers. He notices their need and provides them with that extra attention they deserve daily. These are the animals like Nallie who cant be taken out for many walks because of her dog aggression or Forest and Kringle who were terrified of most people who approached them. Thanks to David, Kringle was able to be placed into a loving foster home through a Colorado rescue, PawsCo. He checks every post about Kringle, now Russell, waiting for the minute hes finally adopted. In Forrests case, before Doug came into the picture, Forrest ONLY trusted one man and that was David. David spent hours with Forrest while he was in holding making sure David could provide Forrest with an environment that causes him the LAST amount of stress. Chrissy, the lead cat attendant is ALWAYS eager to learn and works diligently making sure the cat condos are spotless and the cats get the extra stimulation they need. She puts her creative nature to work cultivating new toys for them from common household objects. Although the medical team has records of every animal on medication, Chrissy makes sure she knows who is on meds, for what, and for how long so she can pay extra attention to them and notice even small details could be essential in their health. If you have a question about any cat in that building, Chrissy has an answer and if she cant remember off hand, she keeps a detailed journal! She rehabilitated a feral kitten, Artimus, and puts in the extra mile to socialize every cat that comes in that door. I guess what Im trying to say here is that yes, there have been major changes to the executive staff of the shelter but I think its time to recognize others who go above and beyond to provide the needed changes at the Humane Society of Fremont County.
