As we have seen from the conciliation of the Republicans, the threatened extortion of shutting down the government to defund the Affordable Care Act was a charade. But not without an impact, however; even with furloughed federal employees receiving their back pay, the servers at lunch counters where they would have eaten these past two weeks won’t see their losses replenished. And we have no guarantee that the rabid right-wingnuts won’t try to sucker us again in three months. The ironies in this sick fiasco are compound. First of all, The Affordable Care Act design comes out of the conservative Heritage Foundation and was made into law originally in Massachusetts by Mitt Romney; we should really be calling it Romneycare, not Obamacare. Second, the Tea Party fanatics knew all along that they could not dislodge it, so they set up a phony up-against-the-wall scenario to force us to give back what they really want, our so called entitlements of Medicare and Social Security. Are we going to give them up? No way! The final absurdity of this charade is that Obamacare rescued the health insurers which were in a death spiral of rising premiums chasing rising costs created out of the competitive mess created in the health care market place by insurers trying to cover only health people who would make no claims. Private insurance in health care could not exist driving prices higher and people out of the market, unless the government rescued them with the subsidies provided to the insurance exchange. I say no more privatization of well-functioning public programs and no more subsidies to bail out the failing industries with our hard earned tax dollars. Medicare for All.
