As we prepare at Shiloh National Military Park for Memorial Day - TopicsExpress

As we prepare at Shiloh National Military Park for Memorial Day weekend activities, we want to present todays Confederate soldier lost in the terrible fighting of April 6 and 7, 1862. 1st Lt. Edward Reed Cryer, Co. H, 2nd Tennessee (Bates) Infantry. Cryer enlisted in Hartsville, Tennessee, on April 25, 1861, at the age of 25. He was mustered into service with the rest of the regiment at Lynchburg, Virginia, on May 14, 1861. The 2nd Tennessee was near Manassas, but did not participate in the first big land battle of the war. Their one-year terms of enlistment were about to expire when Colonel W.B. Bate and the 2nd Tennessee agreed to re-enlist for the war if they could return to their home state to fight. This was granted and they also received furloughs to visit family. However, the men returned to duty early when the call went out for all Confederate forces to report to Corinth, Mississippi. Cryer had just been promoted to 1st lieutenant on April 3, when he was killed on April 6, 1862, in the battle of Shiloh. Like many in the unit, he died with his furlough in his pocket. (Lt. Cryer and the 2nd Tenn. monument)
