As we prepare to celebrate the festival of Chanukah, I send my warmest wishes to the British Jewish community as we mark this special week. Chanukah is a time when the community comes together as one to bring light where there is darkness. It is a time for family, celebration and of rededication. The Festival falls at a time when the scourge of anti-Semitism once again has raised its head at home and abroad. It must be challenged and defeated. Like many others I was deeply shocked and saddened by the recent attack on the Kehilat Bnai Torah synagogue in Jerusalem where four rabbis and one police officer were murdered. There can be no justification or attempt to legitimise such violence. Anti-Semitism, like all other forms of racism, should have no place in our society. At this challenging time we must adopt a zero tolerance approach to anti-Semitism. Chanukah is a festival which teaches us to build a more tolerant and just society for all. As we celebrate this Festival of Lights we must redouble our efforts to work together to counter prejudice and intolerance wherever it is found. On behalf of the Labour Party, I wish the community a Happy Chanukah. Chag Chanukah Sameach!
