As we reflect upon today’s Supreme Court decision, we are mindful that too often, students of color must overcome difficulties as they pursue their education. Out of these hardships, strong, smart, and socially-conscious young people emerge; by sharing their unique perspectives, they broaden the awareness of everyone around them. Diversity contributes to the collective conscience of our college campuses, and creates a leadership force capable of transforming the lives of high-needs students. At Teach For America, we believe the racial diversity of our teaching corps is essential to addressing our nation’s educational inequities. We also know that we will reach our aspirations only if college campuses enroll diverse student bodies. We see every day how a diverse teaching force affects our communities for the better and provides our kids with the rich and varied instruction necessary to make them college- and career-ready. But we need everyone to have a seat at the table, and that starts with supporting measures which encourage people of all racial and cultural backgrounds to have a seat in a college classroom.
