As we take responsibility for our own security in 2014 and hold elections, Afghans face a critical moment of choice. Will we risk falling back into the pattern of 1992, when our differences fragmented our society, and enabled foreign powers to pit Afghan against Afghan? Or will we be acting on the lessons of 1992 and earlier periods, alter what is within us, and unite as a people to build on what we have achieved? We must make the latter choice.
