As we think about history-making events in 2014, we remember Emma Watsons passionate speech on gender equality. In September, she launched UN Womens #HeForShe campaign. Her speech was met with a standing ovation, and it started an important conversation on social media! Read the excerpt below & watch the speech here: goo.gl/fGPkIr This year, we recognized a number of #ExchangeAlumni working to end gender discrimination, particularly during the #16Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. In October, Pakistani alumna and social activist Sana Ejaz organized an interactive classroom discussion on #humanrights to raise awareness about gender-based discrimination in Pakistan. The discussion engaged 35 young students, both male and female. goo.gl/O0PC5q Involving all students in the discussion was very important. As Emma Watson said in her #HeForShe speech: It is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals. We should stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by who we are. We can all be freer and this is what HeForShe is about. Its about freedom. I want men to take up this mantle so their daughters, sisters and mothers can be free from prejudice but also so their sons have permission to be vulnerable and human too, and in doing so, be a more true and complete version of themselves. Well said Emma, and well done Sana!
