As we were about to sit down to lunch at Qdoba today, Bonnie, Jonathan and I noticed that Marie (aka The Velvet Hammer) was engaged in an animated conversation with people at an adjacent table. We assumed that Marie had somehow bumped into a long-lost friend from High School, but then learned it was a group of total strangers. Marie explained, Whenever I go places, I intentionally see how quickly I can engage complete stranger in a meaningful conversation. Most of my job requires that I be able to establish a trust relationship quickly, and Ive found that its the kind of skill that you have to keep using, or youll lose it. Bonnie and I determined that we tend to do this too, though Im certain I dont do so with the conscious effort that the two of them put forth. This is the kind of thing that makes me amazed at the various hidden skills that my siblings possess. As Maries new friends (including a couple of adorable little girls) were leaving, they paused to sing Happy Birthday to her, because... why not?
