As well as the Kapa O Pango Haka, the All Blacks also have their famous Ka Mate Haka, that is often performed prior to an international. Ever since the Native Team of 1888–1889 performed a Haka, the combination of both rugby and Haka has long enjoyed a special place in the hearts of all New Zealanders. The Haka is a war posture dance used to awaken the fighting spirit of the warrior “Kia kōrero te katoa o te tinana” (“The whole body should speak”). The All Blacks perform Haka for the same reasons - to challenge the opposition and to awaken their own aggressive, ferocious wairua before the game. The All Blacks Haka Ka Mate tells the story of one of New Zealand’s most famous chiefs, Te Rauparaha, being pursued and protected by Te Wharerangi. It is performed with the consent of Ngati Toa.
