As well-read as I like to consider myself and open to things that are different, I always am dubious when the cultural elite tout anything as great. I read many plays in theater courses considered great by academia for many reasons while I found them wanting in many ways. I just watched Cloud Atlas, a ball of befuddlement with some visual appeal but overall a giant time-sucker, a 2 and a half-hour investment that paid no dividends. I believe in being artistic and defying conventions but be compelling, understandable, and worth the time.
