As you all know, the Barbel Society proudly engages in a wide variety of research and conservation projects across the country and has been doing so very actively over the last 5 years. The Society has worked collaboratively with the EA, river trusts, educational establishments and of course fishing clubs and organisations and in doing so has funded or part-funded habitat work, scientific research and of course the stocking of small barbel. An R&C update report will shortly be available to view on the Societys website and if you are unfamiliar with the detailed projects being undertaken, then please take a look at the report-its what you, as members of the Society, help to fund and support. Its a surprisingly diverse range of projects managed by a small and highly committed team led by Pete Reading. The famous Throop Fishery on the Dorset Stour has recently benefited from a boost to its barbel stocks with the introduction of 1500 small barbel. This is a project organised by the Society with the funding shared between the Society and the controlling club, Ringwood DAA. The fish have been marked and their progress will be monitored by Bournemouth University who will be asking for catch returns over the next few years to see how these precious juvenile barbel survive. The Society will continue to help with further research and stocking where appropriate as part of its wider programme of R&C work across a number of our barbel rivers. We should also remember that the EA have also stocked 10,000 small barbel further upstream in the last five years and it is hoped that these combined barbel introductions will help to kick-start a self sustaining barbel population. By monitoring the progress of these fish there is much that we can learn that can be used to help other rivers suffering similar declines in their barbel populations.
