As you all know, theres always lots of stuff going on behind the scenes in connection with film discoveries and preservation. It is ALWAYS a partnership with many people making things happen. Several years ago, Darren Németh found two short 35mm mute Technicolor nitrate fragments, one a previously unknown scene from the still largely lost GOLD DIGGERS OF BROADWAY, the other a Technicolor sequence from ON WITH THE SHOW, which survives only in black and white. Both fragment last less than a minute, so it was difficult to get an archive to spend time and money doing anything with these. Fortunately, I was able to bring in Eric Grayson and Bruce Burbank Lawton Jr who helped get the film digitally scanned and then Brian Rose volunteered to try to re-synch the fragments and in the case of ON WITH THE SHOW, drop it into the surviving black and white sequence. Brians handiwork is posted at this site. Enter password Vitaphone (case sensitive) to view it. Since Darrens discovery of the film, over a dozen more fragments of ON WITH THE SHOW, SHOW OF SHOWS and other 1929 WB musicals were found in England earlier this year. George Eastman House will be work with them to similarly either synch up with disks or drop into surviving black and white footage. vimeo/album/3068984
