As you know Im involved in Legends of Oz, Dorothy’s Return which is a 3D animated musical film that was released last weekend by an independent production company. Two brothers that are dear friends are the producers. They have built an Animation business from the ground up that did not include the “big studios.” It truly was a grass roots project that defied the institutional Hollywood model. The companies first film is a beautiful, family centric, kid friendly story that brings OZ to the here and now. It attracted top notch talent such as Lea Michele, Kelsey Grammar, Martin Short, Sir Patrick Stewart, Dan Akroyd, Jim Belushi, Hugh Dancy, Oliver Platt, Megan Hilty and Bernadette Peters. It has been loved by the people that have gone to see it. It has a 89 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been given a score of A by CinemaScore. However, the first weekends box office results were not as expected. As we have gone back and analyzed the root cause we see two main contributors: lack of awareness and unfortunately the critics are lining up against it. The fact is a wholesome, good natured movie that promotes strong values is simply not popular with todays mainstream media.
