As you look forward to this Sunday, here are the Service notes to help you prepare: =========== The 2nd-Last Sunday in the Church Year — November 17, 2013 — Rite 2, p. 60 Hymn 536 O Son of God, We Wait for Thee Confession of Sin – option I Introit - tone 4 Save me, O God, by Your name,/ and vindicate me by Your strength. Hear my prayer, O God;/ give ear to the words of my mouth. He will repay my enemies for their evil./ Cut them off in Your truth. Glory… The Gloria Patri (p. 62) Collect of the Day O almighty, eternal and merciful God, by Your beloved Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, You established the kingdom of grace for us in Your holy Church here on earth, that we might believe the forgiveness of our sins, since You are a God who has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live: We beseech You, graciously forgive us all our sins; through the same, Your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. Amen. St. Isaiah 40.9–11 O Zion, You who bring good tidings, get up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, You who bring good tidings, lift up your voice with strength, lift it up, be not afraid; say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” Behold, the Lord GOD shall come with a strong hand, and His arm shall rule for Him; behold, His reward is with Him, and His work before Him. He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those who are with young. 2 Thessalonians 1.3–10 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, so that we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure, which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer; since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed. St. Matthew 25.31–46 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me. Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Nicene Creed The Chief Hymn 537 Day of Wrath The Sermon The Prayer of the Church Having been reconciled to the Father by the precious blood of Christ, we present our prayers to Him on behalf of the whole Christian Church and all people according to their need. For the Church throughout the world; for The Evangelical Lutheran Synod; for John, our Synod president, and Seven, our circuit visitor; and for pastors, teachers, and all the faithful, that Christ would use us to gather the nations to Him, our one true Redeemer, as we joyfully proclaim that Jesus is Lord. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the healing of divisions among God’s people, that the Lord would curb sinful ambition, silence the desires of our sinful flesh and grant us hearts to be reconciled with each other in Christian love, so that all people will know we are His disciples. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For our national, state and local officials, and all who contribute to our general welfare, that God would grant them wisdom and temperance; and for our police, firefighters, those who serve in the armed forces, and all who for our sake face danger, that they may be kept from harm and that, in accordance with God’s will, peace may be established in our day. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the sick and injured [and especially for __________________], that God would grant them comfort and healing, in accordance with His will; having compassion upon His ailing servants, staying the hand of the evil one, that they may be strengthened in the knowledge of His redeeming love. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all who partake of the Holy Eucharist this day, that in the Savior’s divine body and blood they may receive forgiveness for all sins, a life that never ends and the healing of divine love. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Hear us, O Lord, in these our prayers and grant to us every good and perfect gift through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forevermore. Amen. Proper Preface It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation, humbled himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Risen from the dead, He has freed us from eternal death and given us life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Hymn 538 The Day Is Surely Drawing Near
