As you make your New Years resolutions, please consider this addition: Supporting local. Its a broad enough resolution for you to fill in whatever your passion is. This could be a goal to see a local theatre production once a month, trying a new small restaurant each week, buying season tickets to a Minor League Baseball team, redecorating your whole house with work from an artist in your community, or any number of other things that combine your interests and your community. You could make date night around visiting a craft brewery or small coffee shop, and taking a stroll in the park. Spend the day with your kids at the science museum and then take them to an art class. Challenge yourself to not saying I wish we had [fill in the blank] in my city and figure out how to make it happen. Having an online dialogue about change is a good place to start, but dont let that be the end of it. Want to see fruit plants in a public park? Instead of sharing an image and lamenting that it could never happen in your city, do a little Google research and see if there are organizations who are working on a community garden. Get involved. The groups of people who are trying to create positive change in your community need your support. Whether thats through a financial donation or through volunteer hours, your help is needed.
