As you may recall, I was on holiday earlier this month, taking in the scenery and assorted cloudscapes over the desert region of central Utah. The first picture below is from sunrise on the 14th at Grosvenor Arch which is located east of Bryce Canyon National Park and about 150 miles southwest of Arches (location of second picture). This arch, the second largest natural arch in Utah (which has thousands of them) is quite a fantastic spot and a little off the beaten track so we had the place to ourselves. The shot below that was taken on Friday 15th in Arches National Park. There were fairly large thunderstorm clouds developing on mountain ranges about 30-40 miles off to the southeast and southwest. Saw some evidence of flash flood damage in the park from storms that made a direct hit on the previous two days. It has been a relatively cool summer in this region although this was a blistering hot day with a high close to 37 C, so we rationed our time walking (hiking would be too strong a term). I was hoping to get some lightning shots but we only had one storm overhead and it was during daylight, just some distant lightning at night. . -- Peter for IWO
