As you shop for the holidays, consider picking up something for someone you don’t know. Your contribution can put a smile on a child’s face and clothes on someone’s back. For today’s Laulima family, Mom and Dad have seven children, six boys and one girl. Dad has a full-time job as a delivery man, Mom was laid off. She cares for their children and for her father who lives with them. He is legally blind. Mom does community service for their housing area in exchange for a cut in rent. They wear hand-me-downs from family and friends, and they don’t have a car so dad walks to work. This Christmas, the family would love clothing and footwear. For their 14-year-old daughter, clothes, slippers and perfume would be nice. For 10-year-old twin boys, pants, shirts, socks, boxers and shoes. Their 9-year-old son could use a hat, shirts, shorts and shoes. Their 8- and 5-year-old sons need shorts, shirts and shoes as well. Their 4-year-old son needs clothes and he’s hoping for a bicycle. Mom wears size 12 pants and blouses size large. Dad wears size 36 shorts and shoes size 9.5. Mom’s father could use sunglasses, shorts, pants and shoes. In the spirit of laulima, or working together, you can make a difference for this family by providing a hand up, not a handout.
