As youve probably heard by now, this afternoon I voted AGAINST - TopicsExpress

As youve probably heard by now, this afternoon I voted AGAINST John Boehner for Speaker of the House and proudly cast my vote FOR Trey Gowdy. The goal was to force a second ballot in hopes that one of the stronger conservative candidates would then decide to run. Who we voted for was less important than the number of total votes cast for someone other than John Boehner or Nancy Pelosi. I voted for Trey Gowdy both because he was one of the most frequent names I heard from constituents and because we need someone with his tenacity leading the Republican Party in the House forward. Americans are tired of business as usual in Washington and they want bold leadership that will move our country in a new direction. I felt that it was time for a change, and that change needed to start with a new Speaker. Im obviously disappointed that we fell short of the votes needed to accomplish our goal, but I do think that the effort was worthwhile. Its also worth noting that while the Speaker vote was taking place, President Obama released a statement that he will veto the Keystone XL Pipeline legislation that the House and Senate are planning on passing this month. Why is this relevant? First, its a reminder of the gains we have made. For the past four years President Obama hasnt had to worry about vetoing anything because he had Harry Reid to do his dirty work for him. If there was a bill the President didnt like, he simply called Harry Reid and told him to put it in file 13. Because of YOUR efforts, thats no longer the case. Its also reminder that while its easy to focus on the disagreements within the party, there is still more that unites us than divides us. I know that may be difficult to remember on a day like today, but after a short review of the Presidents record it becomes easier to see. Thank you for your kind words of support. Thank you for giving me the chance to serve as your Congressman. And thank you for taking the time to reach out and share your opinion on this leadership race! If we have this same level of intensity from the American people on spending, energy independence, and restoring our system of checks and balances I feel like we can achieve a lot over the next two years.
